Forklift Safety
Forklift Safety
The Forklift Safety Program is designed to protect employees from injuries and property damage associated with powered industrial trucks (PITs), including forklifts. OSHA’s standard (29 CFR 1910.178) establishes requirements for training, operation, and maintenance to ensure forklifts are used safely in the workplace.
A comprehensive forklift safety program includes:
-
Operator Training & Certification: Employees must complete classroom and hands-on training, pass an evaluation, and be certified before operating a forklift. Refresher training is required after incidents or unsafe operation.
-
Pre-Operation Inspections: Operators must check forklifts daily (or before each shift) to ensure brakes, steering, horns, tires, forks, and safety devices are in good condition.
-
Safe Operation Practices: Always wear seat belts, maintain clear visibility, keep loads balanced and stable, and drive at safe speeds. Never allow unauthorized riders.
-
Load Handling: Ensure loads are within capacity, secure before moving, and carried low to the ground when traveling. Avoid sudden turns or stops that can tip the forklift.
-
Workplace Hazards: Watch for pedestrians, maintain safe clearances from edges and overhead obstructions, and avoid operating forklifts on unstable or uneven surfaces.
-
Maintenance: Remove damaged or malfunctioning forklifts from service until repaired by qualified personnel.
By following a Forklift Safety Program, employers reduce the risk of tip-overs, struck-by incidents, and collisions, while ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and creating a safer work environment.
