Ladder Safety
The Ladder Safety Program ensures that employees know how to properly select, inspect, and use ladders to prevent one of the most common causes of workplace injuries—falls. OSHA’s standards for portable and fixed ladders (29 CFR 1926 Subpart X) outline the requirements that keep workers safe while climbing, reaching, or working at heights.
A solid ladder safety program includes:
-
Selection: Choosing the correct ladder type, duty rating, and length for the job.
-
Inspection: Checking ladders before each use for cracks, loose rungs, slippery surfaces, or missing feet. Damaged ladders must be tagged and removed from service.
-
Safe Use: Always maintain three points of contact, face the ladder while climbing, and never stand on the top rung or use a closed step ladder as a straight ladder.
-
Placement: Set ladders on stable, level ground, at the proper 4:1 angle for extension ladders, and keep them clear of doorways or traffic areas unless secured.
-
Electrical Safety: Never use metal ladders near live electrical equipment or overhead power lines.
By following these practices, employees reduce the risk of falls, ensure equipment is used properly, and help create a safer work environment on every jobsite.
